Two of the most-searched terms in baseball come down to one question: does anyone score in the first inning? Here's what NRFI and YRFI mean, how each settles, and why the first inning gets a market of its own.
What NRFI and YRFI mean
NRFI stands for No Runs First Inning. It is the outcome in which neither team scores during the first inning of a game. The score is still 0-0 once the top and bottom of the first are complete.
YRFI is the mirror image: Yes Runs First Inning. It is the outcome in which at least one run crosses the plate for either team at any point in the first inning. Every game resolves to exactly one of the two. There is no middle ground.
Only the first inning counts
NRFI and YRFI are decided on the first inning alone. Both halves have to finish, with the visitors batting in the top and the home team batting in the bottom. If the game is still scoreless after that, it is an NRFI. If either side plates a run before the first inning ends, it is a YRFI.
Nothing that happens from the second inning on changes the result. A 12-10 slugfest can still be an NRFI if those runs all came later, and a 1-0 pitchers' duel is a YRFI if the only run scored in the first. That is what makes it a clean, self-contained outcome to reason about.
The one inning you can see coming
The first inning is special because you know in advance exactly who will be involved: the two announced starting pitchers facing the top of each team's lineup. No other inning gives you that certainty, which is why the first inning is priced and modeled on its own rather than lumped into the full game.
From there, the same factors that shape any run environment come into play. The two starters and their first-inning tendencies matter most, followed by the hitters due up, the ballpark, and the weather. Strong starters in a pitcher-friendly park lean toward NRFI, while hitter-friendly conditions and a powerful top of the order lean toward YRFI.
