A total ignores the winner and prices the scoring.

An over/under asks a completely different question from a moneyline or a spread. It does not care which team is better, only how many points or runs the two of them produce together. That makes it the market most sensitive to pace, weather, and pitching, and the one most likely to move on news that leaves the game line alone.

Definition

What an over/under is

An over/under, usually just called a total, is a posted number representing the combined score of both teams. You take the over if you think the real figure finishes higher and the under if you think it finishes lower. A 6 to 2 final and a 5 to 3 final settle a baseball total identically at eight runs, because who scored them never enters into it.

Most totals carry a half point so there is always a winner. When a book does post a whole number and the score lands exactly on it, the market pushes and stakes are returned. In a parlay, a pushed leg drops out and the rest of the ticket recalculates rather than losing.

Sport by sport

The same market, three different animals

Football totals live in the low to mid forties and hinge on pace, red zone efficiency, and weather. Sustained wind and heavy rain shorten a passing game and make field goals unreliable, and both effects push scoring down at once.

Basketball totals sit above 200 and are driven mostly by possessions. Two fast teams create more shots for everyone, so pace moves an NBA total further than shooting talent usually does. Rest and rotation news matters here too, because a starter sitting out redistributes both minutes and shots.

Baseball totals are the smallest of the three, typically between seven and eleven runs, which means a single half run is a much larger share of the number. Announced starting pitchers dominate the price, and after that come bullpen availability, the ballpark, and the wind. Baseball also offers the first inning NRFI and YRFI market, which is a total in miniature.

Beyond the full game

Every prop is a total in disguise

Once you see the structure, it shows up everywhere. A team total is an over/under on one side's scoring alone. A first half or first five innings total is the same market over a shorter window, which strips out late relief pitching or garbage time. A player prop is a total on one player's production, whether that is receptions, points, or strikeouts.

The reason this matters is that the same reasoning transfers. Whatever you use to think about a game total, you can apply to a shorter window or to a single player, and the boards on this site price all three the same way: project the number first, then compare it to the posted line.

Reading the price

The number and the juice move separately

A total has two moving parts. The number can go from 8.5 to 9, and the price can go from -110 to -120 while the number stays put. Both are real moves, and on low scoring markets books often prefer the second, because shifting a baseball total by a half run is a bigger adjustment than the situation calls for.

That means judging a total by the number alone can mislead you. Over 8.5 at -105 and over 8.5 at -125 are meaningfully different bets, and only one of them may still be worth taking. Converting both prices to probability with the no-vig calculator makes the gap obvious.

FAQ

Over/under bets, answered

What is an over/under bet?

An over/under, also called a total, is a wager on the combined score of both teams rather than on who wins. The sportsbook posts a number and you choose whether the real combined score finishes above it or below it. The winner of the game is irrelevant to how the ticket settles.

What happens if the total lands exactly on the number?

If the posted total is a whole number and the combined score matches it exactly, the market pushes and stakes are returned. Books post most totals with a half point precisely to remove that possibility, so a total of 8.5 always settles one way or the other.

Are over/unders offered on things other than the full game?

Yes. The same structure covers first half and first five innings totals, team totals for one side only, and player props, which are simply totals on one player's production. In every case you are choosing whether a count finishes above or below a posted number.

What is a team total?

A team total is an over/under on just one side's scoring instead of the combined figure. It is useful when your read is about one offense rather than about the pace of the whole game, since it removes the opponent's scoring from the equation entirely.

What moves a total the most?

Anything that changes how many scoring chances a game will produce. In football that is weather and pace, in basketball it is pace and rotation news, and in baseball it is the announced starting pitchers, the bullpen situation, the ballpark, and the wind. Totals often move on news that leaves the moneyline untouched.

Does weather really change a total?

In outdoor sports it does. Sustained wind and heavy rain suppress passing and kicking in football, and wind direction at an open ballpark measurably changes how many fly balls carry out. Indoor and domed venues remove that variable, which is one reason those totals move less in the hours before a game.

Why is the price on an over/under not always -110?

When a book wants to shade a total without changing the number, it adjusts the juice instead, so one side becomes -115 or -120. On lower scoring markets, a half run or half point is a large fraction of the whole total, so the book often prefers to move the price rather than move the number.

What is the difference between a total and a first five innings total?

A full game MLB total includes everything, bullpens and extra innings included. A first five innings total settles on the score after five complete innings, which keeps the market focused on the two starting pitchers and takes relief pitching and late substitutions out of it.

Every total gets a projected number

Our game boards project a total for each matchup and put it next to the posted line, so the gap between the model and the market is visible before you decide anything.
