The match is the headline. The playthrough is the product.

A deposit bonus credits money you cannot withdraw until you have wagered a multiple of it. That requirement is not a formality, it has a calculable cost, and running that calculation before claiming is the difference between a promotion that pays and one that quietly expires.

Definition

What a deposit bonus is

A deposit bonus, also called a deposit match, credits a percentage of the money you pay in, up to a ceiling. A 100 percent match up to 500 dollars pairs a 500 dollar deposit with 500 dollars of bonus funds. A 20 percent match up to 1,000 dollars would require a 5,000 dollar deposit to reach its maximum.

Those bonus funds are not cash. They sit in the account subject to a playthrough requirement, sometimes called rollover or a wagering requirement, which is the total amount you must stake before anything derived from the bonus can be withdrawn.

The math

What a 500 dollar bonus really costs to unlock

Take a common structure: a 500 dollar bonus with a 10x playthrough and a minimum odds requirement of -200. Ten times 500 means 5,000 dollars of total wagering before the bonus unlocks. That does not mean depositing 5,000 dollars, because the same money is recycled as wagers win and lose, but it does mean putting 5,000 dollars through the book.

Turnover is not free. At standard pricing the sportsbook's hold is roughly 4.5 percent of what is staked, as worked through in what is juice. Applied to 5,000 dollars of wagering, the expected cost of clearing the requirement is around 225 dollars. Against a 500 dollar bonus, that leaves an expected 275 dollars before you account for the chance of running out of bankroll or running out of time.

That is still a positive number, and it is roughly half of what the banner advertised. Raise the playthrough to 15x and the expected cost climbs past 330 dollars, at which point the offer is mostly a way of getting you to wager 7,500 dollars.

Fine print

The clauses that change the answer

The multiplier and what it applies to. Playthrough is sometimes a multiple of the bonus alone and sometimes of the deposit plus bonus, which doubles the requirement without changing the headline. Check which.

Minimum odds. A -200 or -300 floor prevents clearing the requirement on heavy favorites, which is exactly its purpose. It forces you to accept real variance across the turnover rather than grinding it out cheaply.

The deadline. Requirements come with an expiry, commonly between one and three months. Unmet at the deadline, the bonus and usually its winnings are forfeited, which is the most common way these offers deliver nothing.

Excluded markets. Some books exclude specific bet types, or count them at a reduced rate toward the requirement. A wager that counts at 50 percent doubles the work it takes to clear.

Note

MySpariEdge issues no bonuses

We are not a sportsbook, we are not affiliated with any operator's promotion, and we offer no bonuses, matched deposits, or credits. This page exists so a matched deposit offered to you elsewhere can be priced rather than guessed at. Terms differ substantially between operators and between states, and the operator's own terms govern every specific offer.

A wagering requirement is, by design, an instruction to bet more than you otherwise would. That is worth naming plainly. If a requirement would push your staking beyond what you had planned, the bonus is not worth claiming, and our responsible gambling page has resources on keeping that line clear.

FAQ

Deposit bonuses, answered

What is a deposit bonus?

A deposit bonus is a sportsbook promotion that matches a percentage of the money you pay in, up to a stated ceiling. A 100 percent match up to 500 dollars means a 500 dollar deposit is met with 500 dollars of bonus funds. Those funds almost always arrive locked behind a wagering requirement rather than as withdrawable cash.

What is a playthrough or rollover requirement?

It is the total amount you must wager before bonus funds, or winnings derived from them, can be withdrawn. A 10x playthrough on a 500 dollar bonus means 5,000 dollars must be staked. The same money can be recycled across many wagers as it wins and loses, so the requirement is about total turnover rather than about depositing more.

How do you calculate what a deposit bonus is worth?

Estimate the cost of the required turnover. If you must wager 5,000 dollars at standard pricing, where the book's hold is roughly four to five percent of what is staked, the expected cost of clearing it is somewhere around 200 to 250 dollars. Subtract that from the bonus amount and the remainder is a realistic expectation, before considering the risk of not finishing at all.

What are minimum odds requirements?

Most offers only count wagers priced at or above a stated number, commonly around -200 or -300. The purpose is to stop customers clearing a rollover with heavy favorites at almost no risk. It is one of the most consequential clauses in the terms, because it sets a floor on how much variance you have to accept.

Do losing bets count toward playthrough?

At most books, yes. Playthrough usually counts the amount staked, not the amount won, so a losing wager contributes its full stake toward the requirement. That is why the true cost of clearing a rollover is the sportsbook's margin on the turnover rather than the turnover itself.

What happens if I do not complete the playthrough?

The bonus funds and typically any winnings derived from them are forfeited at the end of the offer period. This is the single largest reason deposit bonuses underdeliver: the arithmetic can look reasonable and still fail if the deadline arrives with the requirement unmet.

Is a deposit bonus better than a bet and get offer?

Usually it has a larger headline number and a lower conversion rate. Bet and get offers pay a fixed amount of bonus bets for one small qualifying wager, which converts quickly and predictably. A deposit match can be worth more in absolute terms but requires committing real money and a long stretch of wagering to realize.

Are deposit bonuses withdrawable?

The matched funds themselves are generally not withdrawable until the wagering requirement is met, and at some books they never are, with only the winnings released. Your own deposited money is normally withdrawable at any time, though withdrawing it early can cancel the bonus outright.

Turnover is expensive. Prices matter.

If a requirement means wagering thousands of dollars, the price on each of those wagers is where the cost is decided. Our odds board finds the best available number on every market we track.
